Background Information
The Kenya Institute of Planners Western Kenya Chapter in collaboration with the County government of Kisumu is organizing a World Town Planning Day on 8th November 2022.
The day is celebrated in 30 countries on four continents each November. It is a special day to recognize and promote the role of planners and planning in creating healthy, prosperous
communities. World Town Planning Day presents an excellent opportunity to leverage the planning structures through collaboration to accelerate the implementation of the international development agenda framework
Relevance of the World Town Planning Day
It is a worldwide movement
World Town Planning Day highlights the importance of adequate urban planning, for communities and the world at large. Daily population increase requires proper planning methods that make room for orderly urban expansion while accommodating other land uses.
It appreciates the contribution of urban planning
This day raises awareness of the importance of urban planning and also highlights the amazing contribution of urban planners in our communities so far. This gives an understanding of the important contributions sound planning makes to the quality of people’s lives.
It educates on the importance of proper planning
Awareness of proper planning gives a deeper understanding of the relevance of orderly development. The acquired knowledge on planning from professionals is then cascaded to civilians, various institutions and other relevant bodies.
Goals of the Event:
1. To provide a platform for various stakeholders in the built environment to learn, share and
make partnerships aimed at enhancing participatory and inclusive approach towards well
planned and resilient cities and towns in Kenya.
2. Celebrate Towns planners and institutions engaged in planning through the KIP Awards and
promote positive engagement aimed at promoting effectiveness in the planning service delivery.
Objectives of the Event
The main focus of the event is sensitize people on how planning contribute towards achieving well planned sustainable, resilient and liveable cities and towns.
To enhance collaboration between practitioners engaged in town planning in Western
Kenya
To draw attention to the aims, objectives, and progress of urban and regional planning locally, Nationally and globally.
To highlight the valuable contributions sound planning has made to the quality of global human settlements and their environment.
To disseminate world ideals of urban and regional planning not only within the profession but also among the general public at the local level.
To promote and advocate for integration of resilience in the National, County or Sectoral integrated plans and policies
To sensitize the public about global and local challenges facing urban planning.
To inspire future generations to build sustainable, healthy cities that can withstand the challenges presented by the billions of people that will soon move into cities.
To publicize the positive impact planners have on people’s lives and wellbeing though practice.
