About the Project:
GEC-T falls under the research component of a larger project labeled Girls’ Education Challenge, Pioneering Inclusive Education Strategies for Girls with Disabilities in the Lake Region, Kenya. About the Project: The overall goal of the GEC-1 research study was to understand how girls with disabilities experience education and build on the evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of inclusive education. The research area covered five areas in four Counties, namely Mbita, Migori, Kisumu East, Kuria East and Siaya. This phase of the study revealed gaps in care of female children with disabilities and especially around gendered attitudes and practices. Results indicated that male parents and caregivers were only marginally involved in the care and education of girls with
disabilities. We evaluated the sensitization being conducted by Leonard Cheshire Kenya, evaluated the impact of the sensitization on girls with disabilities and their female caregivers. It was found that male mentors who had undergone sensitization on the care and education of girls with disabilities were more involved, leading to positive social and educational outcomes. However, sensitization across project areas in the Lake Region was haphazard and unmonitored. We developed a formal 8 module curriculum for male mentors and trained project staff to implement the program.
