Maseno University Hosts Eastern Africa Sports 2024: Opening Ceremony

The much-anticipated Eastern Africa Sports 2024 kicked off in style at Maseno University, marking a significant milestone in the region’s sporting calendar. The event brought together athletes, officials, and sports enthusiasts from across Eastern Africa to celebrate the power of sports in fostering unity and excellence.


The Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports (FEAUS) is affiliated to FASU. The Federation has a history that dates back to the 1950s during the times of the when the East Africa Community had one University of East Africa with three Colleges (Makerere, Nairobi and Dar es Salaam University Colleges). The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Julius Nyabundi, Vice-Chancellor of Maseno University, who welcomed the participants with warm words of encouragement and pride. In his address, Prof. Nyabundi highlighted the University’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote collaboration and development within the region.

"We are honored to host this prestigious event, which not only showcases the athletic talent of our region but also fosters the values of teamwork, diversity, and excellence that define our shared identity," said Prof. Nyabundi.

He also encouraged athletes to embrace the values of sportsmanship and build lasting friendships during the event. “This is a moment to celebrate not just victories but the connections we form and the lessons we learn through competition,” he emphasized.

The ceremony also featured remarks from Dr. Simon Munayi, President of the Federation of Eastern Africa University Sports (FEAUS) and a senior academic at the University of Nairobi. Dr. Munayi praised the participating universities for their dedication to nurturing both academic and athletic excellence among students.

“Eastern Africa Sports 2024 is more than a competition; it is a platform for building bridges, celebrating diversity, and inspiring greatness. I am confident that this event will strengthen the bonds among our universities and communities,” Dr. Munayi stated.

The vibrant event was attended by representatives from numerous universities across the region. It featured performances from Maseno University Choir and Band, an athletes’ matching and parade, symbolizing the spirit of unity.

Athletes competing in this year’s games included a wide array of disciplines, ranging from track and field to team sports such as Football, Netball, Volleyball, Rugby, Karate and Boxing. The competitions were set to take place across various facilities at Maseno University, its Campuses and Neighboring schools which have been meticulously prepared to meet international standards.

The Eastern Africa Sports 2024 is expected to leave a lasting legacy, both as a showcase of athletic prowess and as a celebration of the region’s vibrant culture and unity.

Maseno University, renowned for its scenic campus and academic excellence, has proven to be a fitting host for this landmark event.
