Launching of the Maseno University Technical and Innovation Support Centre
The Maseno University Technical and Innovation Centre is finally here! This is after the official launch of the Centre on the 18th of August 2021, by the acting Managing Director of Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI), Mr. John Onyango.
Talks of starting up the Centre commenced in mid-2020 followed by the signing of an M.O.U in January 2021 between KIPI and Maseno University, therefore setting up the stage for the official launch.
The M.D, Mr. Onyango stated that coming up with these Centres was necessitated by the need to mainstream Research Science and Innovation in the country, as Research and Innovation is key in unlocking the development of the nation.
The Vice-Chancellor Maseno University, Prof. Julius Nyabundi was pleased with the good will shown by KIPI in helping set up the Centre, stating that it will help in dealing with issues of filling patents, providing researchers with information regarding innovation and saving innovations within the University.
It is estimated that only a paltry 10 percent of ideas produced in the world are protected in the developing countries. Thus, highlighting a serious need for such centres.
The Maseno University Technical and Innovation Support Centre puts the institution as a reference point for Intellectual property (IP) issues even to the surrounding community, and will as well be looking to share information on IP to other institutions in the country.
