Kifaransa Village launch at Maseno University

In partnership with Kifaransa Village and MUASFRE (Maseno University Association of Students of French), the department of French and other Foreign Languages hosted the launching of the third Kifaransa Village on 11th February 2023 at the university’s South Wing Amphitheater. Kifaransa Village is a kenyan initiative spearheaded by Mr. Sammy Simiyu whose objective is to provide physical spaces to promote the French language and advocate for the wide usage of the language in Kenya. Through partnerships with various institutions and enterprises such as the Alliance Française, Kifaransa Village has successfully launched the Nairobi and Mombasa villages in 2022.

The Kifaransa villages aim to bring together French speakers in the country in order to provide mentorship opportunities, platforms for learning and speaking the French language, collaborating and sharing knowledge as well as harnessing talents among students in French. Kifaransa Village – Western and Nyanza region launch brought together more than 300 participants drawn from all over the country comprising of Teachers of French, students of French from secondary schools and universities, students of Maseno university French department, lecturers, alumni of the department of French, Alliance Française Eldoret and the Kifaransa Village team. Students from secondary schools, Maseno and other universities and institutions presented various entertainment activities in French including original poems written by students, songs and dances.

Invited guest speakers echoed by Mr Simiyu, Mr. Dickens Awiti, Dr. Nuru Kyalo and Dr F. Mulenda reiterated on the importance of learning French and the career paths it can lead to. Mr. Awiti, an alumnus of the department of French, the Mentorship coordinator of MUASFRE, who works as a freelance conference interpreter shared about his experience as an expert in his profession and encouraged students to work hard and master the French language so that they can become proficient and use it in various professions. Mr. Dickens called upon alumni of the French department and the university at large to find ways of giving back to the university by being involved in mentorship programs, making financial donations or in other forms to support students’ initiatives. He launched a Reading club for students of French in Maseno University and promised to donate 100 books to the department of French by the end of the year.
