University of Bayreuth International Research Alumni Conference 

Maseno University recently hosted an alumni conference for Africa, by the University of Bayreuth under the auspices of the sponsorship programme on 29th and 30th September 2018.

The conference was organized by the University of Bayreuth under the auspices of the sponsorship programme: ‘Research Alumni Meetings Abroad’ administered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The conference was not only meant to strengthen the alumni network, but also to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies, which is conducted by the University of Dar es Salaam in close cooperation with the University of Bayreuth.
Prof. Joseph Chacha, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Partnerships, Research and Innovations officially opened the conference that took place at the Kisumu Hotel on behalf of the Prof. Julius Nyabundi, Vice-Chancellor, Maseno University.

Some of the topics that the conference focused on were: property and family forms, energy, environment and governance.

For over 30 years, Bayreuth’s scholars have been conducting joint research with their African Counterparts on topics relating to Africa.

Dr. Stefan Leible, President, University of Bayreuth explains that the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) and the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies (BA)-Under the umbrella of the Institute of African Studies (IAS)-host researchers in the field from all over the world.

“We cooperate with approximately 40 universities in more than 30 African countries. The unique feature of Bayreuth’s focus on African studies are the mutual transfer of knowledge with African, European and North American partners in addition to interdisciplinary cooperation and exchange that takes place within the university,” he adds.
