Department of Animal Science

Teaching:
The Department of Animal Science primarily aims at producing graduates who are competent in animal science, responsive to industry needs and with ability to integrate computer technology in the science and art of livestock production. To achieve this, the department emphasizes quality teaching that incorporates lectures, tutorial sessions, coaching and mentorship, and practical to generate graduates with mindsets of being change agents and industry leaders. Consequently the curricula for the BSc, MSc and PhD programmes are characterized by dynamic content that is responsive to industry needs. We have dedicated faculty and staff with an excellent reputation for advisement and mentoring

The graduates of the Department are trained to gain competencies in practical aspects of the four key pillars of animal production namely animal health; animal nutrition; animal breeding and animal production systems as well as entrepreneurial skills to enable them create jobs as well as fit well in the job market. Besides, the curriculum prepares the graduates for further academic development and careers in teaching, research and extension.

Research
The department of Animal Science is committed to the advancement of biosciences through both basic and applied research. Our faculty and students conduct cutting-edge research straddling ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition, genetics and breeding, animal physiology and health, and sustainability. Outputs of these researches are published in scientific journals of high repute and conferences. The department has strong undergraduate and postgraduate research programmes where students are involved in interdisciplinary research to address real life situations facing the livestock producer community through group as well as individual study research projects.

Community outreach
The department is working towards establishing itself as an outstanding reference centre for animal breeding, nutrition and health in western region to offer prompt advisory services and consultancy to the livestock industry players. To this end an outreach programme involving departmental faculty, staff and students is being developed to be piloted within the university environs before roll-out. This programme will focus on:

 Connecting current research on livestock production and health to producers and consumers
 Rolling out extension packages on appropriate animal husbandry, organic animal production, food safety and health to the farming community within the region
 Offering of subsidized demand driven animal production and health services to the farming community in the region e.g. summer camps and field days, AI, veterinary clinical services, laboratory analysis services
 Youth and gender empowerment through agri-entrepreneurship
