 INTRODUCTION
The B.Sc. (Horticulture) with IT degree programme offers courses and guidance to students who undertake to pursue a degree programme in horticulture with information technology. Horticulture is an applied science discipline dealing with the conservation, improvement, production, processing, distribution and utilisation of fruits, vegetables, flowers and other ornamental plants. Information technology is an applied science dealing with the application of computer science in computing, modeling, information gathering and dissemination via internet, inter alia. The two integrated scientific disciplines are designed to prepare a professional horticulturalist with modern computer based information technology.

OBJECTIVES

a) To develop the students' appreciation, understanding and practical capability in all aspects of the Science and Art of Horticulture.

b) To equip the graduates with all round skills necessary to develop and exploit the national horticultural potential for local and international markets.

c) Produce high quality graduates who are not only competent in applied plant sciences but also as skilled horticultural business managers.

d) Prepare candidates for further academic development and careers in teaching, research, extension and horticultural enterprise management.

e) To provide graduates with adequate knowledge and skills in the application of computer software so as to be able to integrate the Science and Art of Horticulture with modern tools of information technology for efficient application of science in a practical way.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates wishing to pursue a B.Sc. degree programme in Agronomy with IT must meet Maseno University minimum admission requirements. In addition, the candidate must have at least C+ in Biology/Biological Sciences or B (minus) in Agriculture; C (plain) in Chemistry/Physical Sciences and C- in Mathematics or Physics.

 PROGRAMME DURATION

The programme will normally take four academic years.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The courses are offered in units. A course unit is defined as a 2-hour lecture and a 2-hour tutorial or a 3-hour practical session per week per semester. The professional nature of the programme necessitates that in a given academic year the candidates will take a minimum of 16 units and a maximum of 18 units, exclusive of Field Attachment and Research Project. Students will take all the courses offered in each academic year.

There will be a session in between 3rd and 4th year during which students will go for industrial attachment for 10 weeks that is equivalent to 2 units. There will be an independent student’s research project conducted in fourth year that is worth 2 units. During each semester, a student will be required to take 2 courses from the computer department as prescribed.

EXAMINATIONS

a) The University and The School of Agriculture and Food Security regulations apply.

b) All courses shall be examined during the semester in which they are taken.

c) The continuous assessment will be based on written tests and practicals/class assignments.

d) The end of semester examination and continuous assessments shall comprise 70% and30% respectively.

e) The industrial attachment will be assessed out of 100% as follows:-

i) At least two on-field assessments by assigned university academic staff (50%)

ii) Student industrial attachment report (50%)

f) A project undertaken by a student will involve experimental work on a selected topic.The results will be written up as a dissertation and also presented orally.

g) The project work will be assessed out of 100% as follows:-

i) Proposal preparation and presentation (20%).

ii) Assessment of field implementation (30%).
