Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics

Introduction
The Doctor of Philosophy program in Applied Mathematics is aimed at developing the highest level of scholarship, research capability, creativity and writing in the student�s area of specialization.

Objectives
Graduates of the PhD program in Applied Mathematics should be able to use the acquired knowledge and skills to pursue high-level professional careers in

a) Scientific research

b) University teaching

c) Industry

d) National manpower development

Entry Requirements
In addition to the common University admission regulations for a Doctor of Philosophy programme, a candidate for a PhD in pplied Mathematics shall be a holder of a Masters degree in Mathematics or its equivalent from a recognized university.

Duration of the Course
A candidate may be registered as a full time student for the PhD programme in Applied Mathematics for a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years. For part-time candidates, the minimum registration period is four years an maximum seven years.

The relevant Board of Graduate Studies will review registration from time to time. Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory progress.

Registration for PhD Programme
The common university regulations shall apply.

Course Structure
The Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics shall normally consist of �research only. �

De-registration
A candidate shall be de-registered if;

a) �He or she fails to live up to the academic requirements stipulated.

b) He or she conducts himself or herself in a manner that is contrary to the university rules and regulations.

c) His or her sponsor fails to remit funds to the University for the Conduct of studies and research.

d) He or she has not completed the prescribed studies after six years since the date of registration for full time students, and eight years for part time.

e) He or she has not submitted the revised thesis after the prescribed time decided at the time of defence.

Exemptions
Only the Senate on the recommendations of the relevant Board of Graduate studies may grant exemptions from these general rules and regulations.
