The School of Computing and Informatics offers courses which lead to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc IT). IT is identified as one of the six critical sectors in Kenya Vision 2030. The Maseno University (MSU) BSc IT is developed with the aim of exposing the students to the unlimited opportunities in the fast growing IT sector in Kenya, and to equip the students with the practical and theoretical tools and foundations to enable the exploitation of the opportunities for personal and national economic development. The program is a matrix of core and elective courses mapped to a wide array of suggested career tracks, including applications developers, database administrators, IT officers/managers, network administrator, Systems administrators, IT project managers, web content developers, etc. The program specifically focuses on three areas for the entrepreneurial graduate, namely: Mobile systems, Web and Internet Applications, and Network and Information security.


On completion of the programme, the graduates shall be able to:

a) Apply knowledge of Computing and Mathematics appropriate to the discipline.

b) Analyze problems, and provide solutions to IT-based problems.

c) Effectively communicate information, ideas, problems and IT-based solutions.

d) Demonstrate professionalism, ethics, legal, security and social responsibilities as well as best practices and standards and their application in IT fields.

e) Analyze the local and global impact of computing on individuals, organizations, and society.

f) Apply current technical concepts and practices at the core of IT to solve IT problems.


To be admitted into the B.Sc. in Information Technology programme, a candidate must satisfy the minimum University and School of Computing and Informatics admission requirements. Candidates should further meet one of the following minimum requirements:

a) KCSE candidates with a mean grade of C+ and C or above in Mathematics

b) Diploma in IT of Maseno University or Diplomas from recognized institutions with an overall credit pass may be admitted into the second year of study.

c) Other Diploma holders will be admitted into the first year of study and will be granted credit transfers on the basis of individual course units.

d) Other qualifications recognized and accepted by Maseno University.


The duration of the programme shall normally be EIGHT semesters.


a) The courses are offered in units and a unit is defined as one hour lecture or two hours tutorial or three hours practical session per week per semester.

b) In the first and second year of study, all students shall take 48 core units as prescribed.

c) There will be an industrial attachment in the third semester of the third year covering 3 months.


a) The University and School of Computing and Informatics Examination regulations shall apply.

b) All taught courses shall each be assessed by a two hour written examination constituting 70% of the total marks. Continuous assessment shall be based on written tests, assignments and practical work constituting 30% of the total marks.

c) During industrial attachment, there will be field assessment constituting 30%, a written report for the project undertaken constituting 50% and an oral examination constituting 20% of the total marks.
