DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

 INTRODUCTION

The Department of Environmental Science offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Environmental Science Programme that seeks to strengthen the knowledge base of Environmental scholars, enabling them to undertake critical analysis of important environmental management issues, conduct and co-ordinate multi/inter-disciplinary research, and disseminate information and data for sustainable use of natural resources. The knowledge gained by those specializing in Environmental Studies will enable adequate analysis, modeling, prediction and monitoring of environmental degradation leading to effective mitigation measures, rehabilitation and restoration of the environment.

OBJECTIVES

The general objective of the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Environmental Science is to provide training designed to gradually and systematically build and strengthen individuals’ capacities to conduct research into environmental management issues.

The specific objectives are to:

a) Develop the highest level of scholarship, research capability and creative thinking skills in the student’s area of specialization;

b) Produce specialists in various fields of Environmental Studies who will provide innovative ideas to solve existing and emerging environmental problems;

c) Produce professionals equipped with specialized knowledge, awareness and skills so as to incorporate environmental considerations in all national development strategies and plans;

d) Enable candidates be employed in research and teaching post in institutions of higher learning, public and private sectors.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of their study, the students are expected to have:

a) The highest level of scholarship, research capability, and creative thinking skills in the area of specialization;

b) Expertise in specific components of the environment and able to provide innovative ideas to solve existing and emerging environmental problems;

c) Specialized knowledge and skills to be able to incorporate environmental considerations in all national development strategies and plans;

d) Qualification to be employed as a researcher or Lecturer in public and private sectors.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for admission into this programme, the applicant should be a holder of either of the following:

a) A Masters degree in Environmental Science from Maseno University or any other recognized University; or

b) Other qualifications considered by Senate as equivalent to a Masters degree in Environmental Science.

PROGRAMME DURATION

The duration of the PhD programme shall normally be a minimum of three (3) years and a maximum of five (5) years for a full time student. A part-time student may be registered for a minimum of four (4) years and a maximum of seven (7) years. Continuance of registration will depend on evidence of satisfactory progress reports.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Research and Supervision

a) A candidate registered for the PhD programme shall be required to pursue research under the guidance of a supervisor.

b) Senate shall normally appoint two supervisors for a candidate according to the University Examination Rules and Regulations for Post-Graduate Studies.

 EXAMINATIONS

The University Examination Rules and Regulations shall apply.

THESIS

The doctoral programme shall normally consist of thesis research only. However, level 8 (Masters level) course auditing shall normally be undertaken in areas of student deficiency. All audited course work shall normally be done within the first three semesters for both full time and part-time students.
