CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

INTRODUCTION
Community development has a long history in people’s endeavors to find solutions to their well-being. However, recent development challenges have put this approach as well as the process firmly on the development agenda. Ideas about social inclusion, participation, voluntary action, empowerment and sustainability of initiatives are now being preferred to state-centered development approaches. Consequently, there is need to understand how people can be brought together to solve challenges to their livelihoods. This programme is designed to introduce students to the nature of community development work.


OBJECTIVES
The certificate programme in Community Development is intended to enable students:

a) understand the basic features of community development;

b) effectively participate in the development of communities by acquiring skills that enhance identification of community challenges as well as formulation of their solutions; and

c) acquire knowledge that can qualify them to pursue further studies.


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be holders of a Kenya Certificate of Education (KCSE) with a minimum mean grade of D+ and above; or its equivalent


DURATION AND STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
The duration of the programme shall be one academic year, consisting of two semesters. Students will be required to take and pass four units in each semester to qualify for the award of the certificate. There will be three contact hours per week for each unit and each unit will run for a period of twelve weeks.
