The chairman of the Department of Medical Physiology, Prof. Ngwena, recently co-authored a paper entitled "Curriculum and training needs of mid-level health workers in Africa: a situational review from Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda"
The publication is availble online
Highlights of paper are:

  • Older programmes more didactic in their training approach.
  • Lacking of resources.
  • Concerns regarding skills gaps and of training quality raised, however most felt their basic training was adequate for the work they do.
  • Needed updating with additional skills offered and addition of problem-solving approaches and practical procedures that could be life-saving.

First student from MSc, Medical Physiology Programme defends thesis.

Sheila Jaika

The very first MSc, Medical Physiology student, from the Department of Medical Physiology, has presented to defend her thesis. On the 11th July, Sheila Malesi Jaika, very successfully carried out a thesis defense. This event took place at the School of Graduate Studies, (SGS), main campus.
Started in 2015, the MSc Medical Physiology programme enrolled three students that year. One, Sheila, presented for defence today and the others to follow soon.
Target students for enrolment for this programme are students from BSc Nursung, B.Pham, Physical thrapy graduates and other students from the Biologocal Science with adequate units in physiology.
Her thesis title was "Prevalence of Metabolic syndrome components by age and gender among Maseno University Students, Kenya"
Supervisors: Prof. Ng'wena G. Magak and Dr. Owiti M.G.

Department congratulates her and wishes her the best in her future endevours.
