To ensure relevance in its all academic programmes the university established the Quality Assurance Directorate. The Directorate is mandated to collaborate with relevant institutions on quality of academic programmes and carry out market survey. This help in the exercise of review or restructuring of programmes as need arises. The University has enhanced the relevance of training by ensuring exposure of students to industry through attachments in many more programmes. The need for quality of staff running the programs in the university is critical. The University has been identifying and supporting staff for PhD education. In the last five years the university has supported about twenty (20) academic members of staff in training at PhD levels on full time. In addition a quite a number were also granted scholarships through the graduate assistants program However competition  from other universities and institutions with better facilities and remunerations is both a threat and challenge which may lead to loss of core staff

Taking cognizance of the fact that the country's economy has not been very vibrant, as reflected in the rate of unemployment and the consequent careful selection of degree programmes by students, the University embarked on the restructuring, rationalization and harmonization of its academic departments, faculties, schools, institutes and centers.

Prof. Mary J. Kipsat
Deputy Vice Chancellor

The second aspect of the reorganization took into account the tough competition graduates face in the job market. In today's world the skill to handle Information and Communication Technology is a must in any job place. A major component of the change, therefore, was the infusion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into 18 of the 19 programmes. The University currently has 51 postgraduate programmes distributed in all faculties and schools. These comprise of 4 postgraduate diplomas, 32 Master and 15 Ph.D.
