Third boot camp for actuaries held


The Actuarial Society of Maseno University recently held a two day Actuarial Boot Camp at the Kisumu Hotel.
The main theme of the Boot Camp was to highlight some of the roles of actuaries in risk and investment management and its role in achieving vision 2030. It targeted professionals and students from all universities in Kenya offering actuarial science.
Some of the key areas addressed at the camp was how to survive after graduation, areas of specialization in the actuarial field such as health insurance, finance and investment, pension schemes, enterprise management, enterprise risk management, derivative pricing and life insurance; path to be a qualified actuary in the world, how to get scholarship and emerging new roles in the field.

During the camp, Insurance Regulatory Authority’s Mr. James Ndigwa encouraged students to be self-reliant and learn to create jobs and encouraged them to invest in entrepreneurial jobs.
“Do your degree and create your own job. Become entrepreneurs. The world is flooded with graduates from across the country so it’s very competitive. Think beyond papers and careers,” he emphasized.

Maseno University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dominic Makawiti promised to support the students and the department at large in all aspects ranging from accreditation, employing more staff and equipping the department with necessary items that can aid learning.

“Students should be aggressive and grab chances at hand by utilizing opportunities presented to them and aim at gaining exposure in the industry. Adding that they should be ready to work as interns or trainees and put knowledge in practice to shape on competence before they seek for employment,” he advised.
Career guidance was also shared at the bootcamp which  included issues like writing Curriculum Vitaes, application letter, email writing and how to dress for an interview or when meeting potential employers.
The students also engaged in the varsity challenge where the judges presented questions and student groups gave answers. Some of the judges, who are qualified actuaries with acres of experience and vast knowledge in the sector, were Mrs. Sheila Gatu of Faventia Actuaries, Mr. Dennis Wachira of Intra Africa and Steve Muia of Smart Youth and NSE who beautified the event.The Originals, a group of third year students from Maseno University grabbed the trophy as first runners up.

The occasion provided a platform for socialization and interaction between the professionals and the students that ensured that they meet the objective of creating lasting networks between the students and the corporate world. It also gave key actuarial institutions where one can register and become members of The Actuarial Society of Kenya (TASK), Institute for Faculty of Actuaries UK (IFOA) among others.
The event was attended by representatives from top organizations such as Mr. James Ndigwa of Insurance Regulatory Authority, Evelyn Nduati of Actserv, Lucy Muthoni of Strathmore University, Michael Vaati of Alexander Forbes, and Dr. Fred Onyango of Maseno University among others.

Other universities represented at the event were Mount Kenya University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, Strathmore University, Moi University and University of Eldoret.
