B Sc Industrial Chemistry


Introduction
The Department of Chemistry offers a four-year programme for the degree of Bachelor of Science. The programme involves both theoretical and practical courses in the areas of pure and applied chemistry. The courses are designed to allow for flexibility in the degree structure.

Objectives
The specific Objectives of the programme are as follows; To produce graduates with firm knowledge in pure dissemination of knowledge To prepare graduates with capacity for sustainable scientific and technological development. Programme Structure Chemistry is taught as a single subject in combination with other science subjects approved by the Faculty of Science. Each course is offered in units. A unit is defined as a one-hour lecture of a two-hour tutorial or a three-hour practical session per week per semester.In the first year of study, a student shall take six compulsory core units. units from University common courses. In the second year of study, a student shall take a minimum of twelve (12) units in Chemistry.In the third and fourth years of study, a student shall normally be expected to follow the 5:3:2:2: degree structure in which students can be a major, regular, or minor in chemistry as follows: Major: A minimum of 30 units in Chemistry. Regular: A minimum of 20 units in Chemistry. Minor: At least 12 units in Chemistry.In special cases, to be determined by the department, students may follow either 5:3:1:1 or 5:3:2:1 degree structure in their third and fourth years of study.In the 5:3:1:1 degree structure, a candidate takes a minimum of 40 required units in Chemistry, both in the third and fourth years of study.In the 5:3:2:1 degree structure, a candidate takes at least 30 units in Chemistry in the third year and a minimum of 40 required units in Chemistry in the fourth year of study.Master of Science in Chemistry The Master of Science Degree in Chemistry programme duration shall normally be a minimum of two academic years (four semesters) for full time registered students and up to four years for part-time students.

Admission Requirements
Common rules and regulations for Masters of Philosophy degree of Maseno University entry requirements shall apply.Candidates with the following qualifications shall be considered eligible for registration in the Master of Science in Chemistry degree programme. A holder of at least an upper second class honors Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry as a single discipline or in Chemistry in combination with other science disciplines A holder of at least an upper second class Bachelor of Education degree honors with Chemistry as a major subject. A holder of a lower second class honors Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with proof of research capability through scientific publications in relevant fields. Any others that Maseno University Senate may consider having equivalent qualification
