Department of Obsterics And Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was established in 2014 as part of Maseno University's Medicine (MBChB) program. The desire to enhance reproductive health capacity among doctors necessitate a more elaborate training with an eye for a patient centered approach and reduction in maternal mortality.

The faculty consists of four members with diverse experience in reproductive health knowledge. The department currently participates in three undergraduate programs being undertaken with other departments and also participates in the training of residents in the Family Medicine master's program. The department hopes to commence a masters program in obstetrics and gynecology within 2 years.

The department has ongoing research projects. We endeavor to partner with several organizations to broaden the research component in our training program and allow explore for exchange programs for our students.

The department teaches two major courses: Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In Obstetrics, the primary goal is to enable our students have expertise in the field of midwifery. We are cognisant of the fact that in our region a significant number of women die during childbirth. For this reason, we prepare our students to be able to reverse maternal mortality, treat any conditions that may arise during pregnancy and lastly, make this journey a comfortable one for women.

In Gynecology, students are prepared to have the skill to handle all reproductive health issues that affect women out of pregnancy. We focus on helping understand the fields of gynecological cancers, infertility and infections. In this field, we emphasise on training them on latest technology that will make patients outcomes superior.

The department also participates in the teaching of the following MBChB Courses hosted by other departments:

1. Introduction to Clinical Techniques Course - hosted by the Department of Internal Medicine for third year students.  This course introduces students to the clinical setting, teaching them communication, techniques of relating to clinical patients, professionalism and etiquette.
2. Emergency Medicine Course for undergraduate MBChB students.  This course is hosted by the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health for fifth year MBChB students.  Students are introduced to the basic principles of emergency obstetric care in line with needs drawn out by the national department of reproductive health.
3. Department offers teaching for postgraduate students from the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health in their obstetrics and gynecological related rotations.
