Department of Medical Physiology

Department Overview:

The Department of Medical Physiology is one of the fundamental departments in the School of Medicine.   It currently offers courses in Physiology, MBS 103- Medical Physiology I and MBS 200- Medical Physiology II, to medical students in the first and second years of study. The courses allow students to understand and appreciate the normal functions of various body parts from molecular to macro physiology, and how every aspect contributes to the well being of the corporate body. These include cellular biology, structure and functions of cellular components and uniqueness of various cell types in the body and their functions, the genetics as part of introduction to the application of genetics in therapeutics and understanding of disease causation and novel approach to medical treatment and research. The macro physiology enables students to understand how various body parts interact to achieve healthy state. This is intended to prepare the medical students to be able to identify abnormal functions /disease. The courses are taught through lectures, practicals and tutorials.  Students are also exposed to several continuous assessments and assignments to monitor the extent of their understanding of the discipline.
The department’s research areas include neuroscience, cardiovascular physiology, renal physiology, and respiratory physiology. The department is in the process of developing Masters Degree courses in Medical Physiology and will soon admit postgraduate students.

The Department of Medical Physiology is one of the foundation departments for basic sciences in the School of Medicine.
It offers medical physiology related courses to medical and nursing students in the schools of medicine and nursing repsectively.
Medical students as part of the MB, ChB programme are offered the courses of;

  • MBS 103- Medical Physiology I.
  • MBS 200- Medical Physiology II.

Nursing studets are offered;

  • MBS 101 - Medical Physiology.
