Programme Objectives
To:

    1. Produce professionals with a firm theoretical and practical background knowledge in Communication and Media Technology.
    2. Train specialized graduates in communication management, media technology and production.
    3. Expose students to political, historical and cultural factors that shape the nature and content of media messages and information.

Admission Requirements
Applicants eligible for admission into the program must:

  1. Satisfy the minimum entry requirements for admission to the University and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
  2. Attain a pass in language at KCSE or equivalent.

Duration of the Programme
The duration of the program shall normally be four (4) academic years.
Teaching methods in all units shall include lectures, field trips, seminars, tutorials, discussions, and practical.

Degree Structure
The program offers courses within the degree structure spelled out by the Faculty.

Course Structure

  • The Department offers courses in terms of units as defined by the faculty.
  • There shall be CORE, ELECTIVE and REQUIRED courses. Core courses are mandatory, while Elective and Required courses may be chosen by students as preferred in fulfilling the full-time load requirement. Required courses are taken from other departments.
  1. In the first year, students will be required to take two to three courses from Communication and Media Technology and several required courses from other programs/departments in the University to fulfill the full load required.
  2. In the second year, students will be expected to take media courses.  In addition they may take required courses to fulfill the required load.
  3. Students shall take all units from Communication and Media Technology in their third and fourth year of study, but may take required courses in addition provided that such required courses do not take the students optimum units per year beyond 48.
  4. There shall be an industrial attachment at the end of third year running continuously for three months for students in their respective areas of interest and specialization.
  • With the guidance of the lecturer concerned, students shall contribute to and manage in-house publications and production to sharpen their skills in print and electronic media, Photojournalism, Public Relations and Advertising.
